Xposure International Photography Awards

Xposure combines cash awards with a substantial photography gathering in Sharjah. The attraction is a chance to put distinctive work before a specialist audience without buying entries; the obligations include verification and lasting promotional use of selected images.

Our assessment · Recommended for the right photographer

A worthwhile free entry for strong visual stories, with a real festival behind the awards.

We recommend considering this for your strongest recent work. A free submission removes the usual question of whether another category fee is justified, but it does not make every eligible frame a useful entry. Edit for a clear subject and visual purpose. We would give priority to images that say something beyond demonstrating access to a spectacular location. [2][3]

A good fit for

  • Photographers seeking an international festival audience, particularly where narrative and a clear visual idea matter as much as technical polish. [2]

Think carefully if

  • Photographers who require strict control over later promotional use, or who cannot supply originals and releases. Also check the separate rules before entering other Xposure programmes. [1]

What you will actually pay

Entry costs, explained.

Free throughout this programme; there is no paid adult entry route.

Entry routes for 2026/7 photography awards — entries closed
Entry routeCostWho and what it covers
Main photography awardsFreeAll nationalities, over 18; up to ten images/films per account. [1]
Junior awardsFreeUAE residents only; see the age-boundary caveat below. [1]

Preparation time is the main entry cost. Do not commission a new trip solely because the prize looks attractive; start with work you already judge strong enough for public exhibition. [1][3]

Make the photograph tell its story

The oversight process checks captions, metadata, originality and narrative coherence as well as technical execution. That gives a useful indication of how to prepare: a dramatic frame needs an accurate, economical explanation of what happened. A photograph whose meaning disappears when its caption is removed may need more visual clarity; an impressive scene with a misleading caption is a liability. [2]

Xposure publishes the names of its oversight committee, including Shane Gross, Pete Muller and Lars Boering. Named reviewers and a described review process are practical credibility indicators. They do not establish that every entrant receives a personal critique, and we would not enter expecting one. [2]

A substantial festival, with measurable past activity

PetaPixel's report from the tenth festival in 2026 described exhibitions, working photographers, portfolio reviews and more than 29,000 award submissions from 60 countries. Its journalist attended in person but disclosed that Xposure paid travel and hospitality. We treat this as useful reporting of a functioning event, with that relationship visible, rather than an impartial rating of the competition. [3]

The value is the relevant audience assembled around the photographs. That is stronger evidence than a promise of online impressions alone. Nevertheless, selection cannot guarantee commissions, sales or editorial publication; the quality and relevance of your work still determine what you can make of the opportunity. [3]

Cash and an exhibition, not the whole pool

The overall award is US$6,000, category wins $3,000 and runners-up $1,500, with ceremony travel and accommodation at these tiers. Nominees receive festival and online display. The overall winner cannot also take a category placing. [1]

For budgeting, distinguish a shortlisted image from a cash-winning result. A festival credit may help introduce your portfolio, but its usefulness depends on whether you actively develop the connection. Treat cash as an exceptional outcome, not the expected return on making pictures. [3]

Recent originals and category-specific exceptions

Images must be no more than three years old. Ordinary entries cannot add/remove content or mislead through staging; AI and creative-expression work has a separate exception and provenance requirements. Visual Storytelling needs six sequenced photographs and English captions. [1]

Selected images carry a lasting permission

Copyright stays yours. Awarded, nominated and shortlisted images receive an unlimited, non-exclusive licence for Xposure promotion in all media; awarded work also enters its yearbook and public archive. Secure relevant third-party permissions before submission. [1]

Our view is that this deserves a conscious choice even when entry costs nothing. An image under an exclusive client agreement may be unsuitable. If control over future reuse matters more to you than festival recognition, choose a different photograph or decline the opportunity. [1]

The reviewed round has closed

Photography closed on 20 September 2026 after an extension. Finalist notification is scheduled for 1 November. Keep original files available for verification. The film and independent-photojournalist programmes have different requirements and deadlines. [1]

Before the next call, assemble a small, defensible selection: reliable dates, accurate locations and captions, originals, and permissions. Recheck the next edition's rules before uploading. Recurrence is a reason to bookmark a contest, not evidence that the next dates or categories are already settled. [2]

Details still worth checking.

The junior wording says under 18 but its upper band includes age 18, while the adult wording says over 18. Anyone exactly 18 should obtain written clarification; we have not guessed the intended boundary. [1]
