Travel Photographer of the Year
An established travel photography award with a real record of published winners. Its strongest proposition is for photographers who can build a convincing set of images; adult entry costs money, and the headline title cannot be won with a single photograph.
Our assessment · Recommended for the right photographer
A credible stage for a strong travel portfolio—with a fee worth budgeting.
We would shortlist TPOTY for a photographer with a distinctive travel portfolio and a limited, deliberate competition budget. Its long history, judged selection and demonstrated press coverage make a stronger case than a promise of “exposure” alone. But paying to enter is a speculative expense, not a marketing service: most entrants will receive neither a prize nor publicity. Choose the route that suits your strongest work rather than buying more chances. [1][8][9][2]
A good fit for
Think carefully if
- You mainly want prize money or predictable commercial returns. The overall cash award is £1,000; the case for entering rests substantially on recognition. [4]
- You have one excellent image but no strong portfolio. One Shot is a legitimate option, but it does not qualify you for the main TPOTY title. [14]

What you will actually pay
Entry costs, explained.
Adults: £14 single image; £36 for two portfolios. Young TPOTY: free.
| Entry route | Cost | Who and what it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Young TPOTY | Free | Four images; aged 18 or under on 12 October 2026. Separate 14-and-under and 15–18 groups. [5] |
| One Shot | £14 / £20 | One image, or two entries bought together. Adult route; not entry to the overall portfolio title. [14][3] |
| Portfolio | £28 / £36 | One set of four images, or two sets bought together. Two portfolios qualify for the main title at no extra charge. [13][4] |
| Rising Talent | £30 | One six-image entry; amateurs and semi-professionals aged 19+. One entry per photographer. [6] |
| Larger bundles | £59 | Either 6–10 One Shot images, or four One Shot entries plus two four-image portfolios, purchased together. [14] |
The “free” overall award means no additional fee after buying the qualifying portfolios. It is not a free adult competition. At the published bundle rate, £36 is the starting budget for an attempt at the headline title. [2]
Our value judgement: this is a meaningful discretionary cost, especially if you enter several contests. The two-portfolio bundle works out at £4.50 per photograph, compared with £14 for a lone One Shot entry. Only use a bundle if the extra pictures are genuinely strong. Expired early offers, including the £99 pass, are not included as currently available prices. [2][13]
What kind of work does well?
TPOTY opened its first competition in February 2003, after Chris and Karen Coe set out to challenge the idea that travel photography amounted to attractive brochure pictures. That remains a useful way to approach it: look for a point of view, an experience or a story, rather than assuming an exotic location is enough. [1]
The 2026 portfolio themes span journeys, cultures and celebrations, natural and urban landscapes, and wildlife. Single-image routes cover nature, people, street photography and black-and-white travel. For the overall title, the organisers look for breadth and originality across two portfolios; our advice is to edit each set as a sequence, avoiding near-duplicates and a weak fourth image. [7][4]
Reputation and realistic exposure
There is evidence of an audience beyond the awards website: PetaPixel published an illustrated feature on the 2025 winners in January 2026. It reported more than 20,000 submitted photographs from 160 countries. Those are participation figures, not readership, and not a basis for calculating your chance of winning. The coverage is useful evidence that success can attract editorial attention; it promises nothing to an ordinary entrant. [9]
TPOTY describes three rounds of anonymous judging, with photographers, editors, image buyers and other specialists; sponsors do not sit on the panel. We regard that as a meaningful strength. Exhibition activity is part of its history, but the current exhibition page says future venues are still to be confirmed. Budget on the competition itself, not on a particular museum exhibition or guaranteed number of viewers. [8][10]
What could you actually win?
The 2026 overall winner receives £1,000, a portfolio review with New York photographers’ agent Frank Meo and Radiant Photo software. These are the benefits of the overall title, not a prize offered to everyone who wins a category. [4]
Category packages differ. The landscape portfolio winner is offered £750 and software; the In Nature One Shot winner £500 and software. Travel Image of the Year adds a £200 bursary for an image selected from eligible category winners. Young TPOTY offers £500 for its overall winner and £250 for each age-group winner, with the stated workshop or critique opportunities. Read the package for your chosen route before paying. [13][14][15][5]
Rising Talent may appeal for development rather than a trophy, but its 2026 mentoring prize is not yet finalised on the official page. A past Sri Lanka trip is not a confirmed 2026 entitlement. If mentoring is your sole reason to enter, that uncertainty materially weakens the value proposition. [6]
Eligibility and rules that can catch you out
The main adult routes are open internationally to amateurs and professionals aged 19+. Rising Talent excludes full professionals. Young TPOTY uses age on the closing date, and its category page explicitly gives 12 October 2026. Older photographs are allowed if they still represent contemporary subjects; this is not a contest restricted to photographs made in the last calendar year. [3][6][5]
Previously winning single images in other international travel contests cannot enter One Shot, although they can form part of a portfolio. An identical portfolio that has already won elsewhere in an international travel contest is excluded. Keep original files and metadata: finalists must supply originals. Generative AI, sky replacement and adding or removing objects are prohibited; ordinary optimisation and sensible denoising are allowed. [3]
Copyright and the licence you give
You retain copyright and are credited. The rules permit free reproduction and exhibition connected with TPOTY, including award books, catalogues and apps; this is more than permission to judge the files. They distinguish other merchandise and unrelated uses, which need separate agreement and payment. Our assessment is that this is a reasonable competition-related licence, but do enter expecting award publicity and book use without a separate fee. [3]
The organiser’s FAQ also says photographers remain free to use their own images and that prints and cards in its collection use separate agreements with royalties. This is a useful distinction from a licence allowing unrestricted unrelated advertising. It is still worth reading the full terms for the images you intend to submit. [11]
Preparing an entry
The 2026 deadline is 12 October at 23:59 UK time. Upload through the official system. Initial files must be JPEGs, no larger than 3 MB and 2,000 pixels on the longest edge, in sRGB or Adobe RGB. Keep larger originals for the finalist stage. A technically valid upload matters as much as an attractive edit: an oversized file may fail to appear in your entry. [3][12]
Start with the category brief, then choose the images, then buy the appropriate bundle. For a portfolio, judge the weakest photograph as critically as the strongest. If your aim is recognition for a body of work, a tightly edited pair of portfolios is a more defensible spend than scattergun single-image entries. [13][4][2]
Details still worth checking.
The organiser’s pages contain inconsistent legacy text: the general rules mention a 2025 youth cut-off in one paragraph, while the dedicated 2026 youth page specifies 2026; early-discount and pass dates also differ between pages. We use the explicit current youth page and standard fees. Seek clarification if your eligibility depends on a boundary. Exhibition venues and the Rising Talent mentoring package remain unconfirmed. [3][5][2][10][6]
