PORTRAITS — Hellerau Photography Award

Hellerau suits portrait photography with an idea behind it: identity, belonging, imagined lives and the relationship between subject and photographer. Its exhibition record gives the fee a credible purpose, but finalists must think about print production, transport and long-term presentation rights.

Our assessment · Worth considering

A serious exhibition opportunity for thoughtful portrait projects, with costs beyond entry.

Worth considering when you have a developed project that responds convincingly to the annual theme. We would prioritise the chance to show a coherent body of work over the possibility of a cash prize. It is less compelling for a polished but interchangeable portrait, or for someone who cannot commit to the practical demands of an exhibition. [3][6]

A good fit for

  • Artists using portraiture to explore a sustained personal or social question, particularly where a sequence deepens the idea rather than repeating a visual formula. [3]

Think carefully if

  • Photographers on a tight budget: a selected entry can require shipping physical work. Sponsored printing is available only to selected participants, and recovering those prints later has additional costs. [4]

What you will actually pay

Entry costs, explained.

2026: €30 per single image or €50 per series; eligible students could request a 50% discount.

Entry routes for 2026 Escapism — entries closed; exhibition opens 6 November
Entry routeCostWho and what it covers
Single portrait€30Adult entrant; a work responding to Escapism. [1]
Series€50Up to 20 photographs forming a connected project. [1]
Student discount€15 single / €25 seriesValid current student/school evidence and a code requested by 29 March 2026. [4]

Each separate submission attracts a fee, which is non-refundable. The discount deadline was earlier than the final entry deadline. These are the completed round's prices, not an offer to enter now. [4]

A theme that asks for more than an attractive face

The 2026 theme, Escapism, explores imagined alternatives to everyday pressures: retreat, fantasy, transformed identities and other ways of living. The organiser's brief connects this with Hellerau's history of social and artistic experimentation. A response can be documentary or constructed, but should offer a recognisable point of view. [3]

Our advice is to explain the relationship between the subject and the theme in direct language, then check that the photographs sustain it. Avoid writing a grand statement that the images cannot support. Twenty pictures is a ceiling, not a target: a shorter sequence may carry more conviction. [3][2]

A documented exhibition programme

The award was founded in 2015. The Dresden Technical Collections museum documents the 2025 finalist exhibition and its accompanying catalogue. That is concrete evidence of a public programme with physical work on walls and a publication, rather than only an online winners page. [3][6]

The German Photographic Society also publicised the 2025 call and its expert jury, including Ute Mahler. This supports its standing within a specialist artistic network. It is a professional-body notice, not an independent measurement of visitors or sales; we would not turn it into a promise that selection produces commercial success. [5]

The organiser reports more than 50,000 visitors to the 2025 finalist show. Treat that as its reported historical attendance, not a forecast for the new venue or a count of people who will engage with your individual project. [3]

Exhibition first, three cash prizes second

The published 2026 cash awards are €5,000, €2,000 and €1,000: €8,000 combined, rather than an €8,000 first prize. The current announcement places the finalist exhibition and awards on 6 November at Motorenhalle Dresden. Its reference to a residency does not establish a current cash value, which we have not added to the prize total. [2][3]

Previous winners on the official programme include Gloria Oyarzabal and Michel Kekulé. Look at their projects to understand the level of conceptual development the event accommodates. The useful comparison is whether an exhibition here would advance your own practice, not how the largest advertised figure compares with another contest. [2]

Adult entrants and photographic work

The 2026 call admitted adults aged 18 or over, with no restriction on when the work was made. Organiser staff, jurors and sponsors were excluded. AI-created work was ineligible. The German terms control interpretation and require permission for the people and other protected material depicted. [4]

The English version retains an outdated student-registration year. The controlling German version instead asks for valid current proof and the March code-request deadline. We use that wording for the discount rather than repeating the stale date. [4][1]

Long-term exhibition and reporting permission

Entry grants unlimited time and territorial permission for PORTRAITS exhibitions and related scientific and organisational work. Awarded work may appear indefinitely in reporting about PORTRAITS. Commercial use and the large exhibition catalogue require a separate agreement. Read the eventual exhibition contract before committing physical work. [1]

Budget for the physical exhibition

Submissions closed on 3 May 2026 through Picter. Finalists normally bear transport costs, although some receive sponsored production. Retrieving sponsored prints afterwards costs a €75 production charge plus shipping. Uncollected prints can pass to Kunstagentur Dresden after six months, with a destruction option during that period. [1]

That print-ownership provision concerns the objects produced for the show; it should still be considered carefully alongside the separate image permissions. Our recommendation is to agree production, return and display arrangements in writing, and to decide what you can afford before chasing the prospect of selection. [1]

Details still worth checking.

No future entry round has been verified. The current website mentions a residency at the November ceremony, but its full 2026 package is not established in the reviewed terms. We therefore describe the confirmed cash prizes and avoid promising a residency benefit to future entrants. [3][1]
