Ocean Photographer of the Year

This award combines documented press attention and exhibitions with relatively inexpensive category entry. Its wide permission to use every submission, including competition merchandise, deserves as much attention as the prizes.

Our assessment · Worth considering

Substantial ocean-photography visibility, with a broad merchandise licence to accept

Worth considering for ocean photographers who actively want this combination of editorial and exhibition circulation and can accept the image-use bargain. The modest category fee buys capacity for several photographs, but low entry cost does not mean narrow rights. Photographers with exclusive licensing obligations or an established print business should weigh the promotional benefit against the continuing permissions granted. [1][2][5][7]

A good fit for

  • Ocean and conservation photographers seeking an audience beyond a specialist winners gallery [5][7]

Think carefully if

  • Photographers who need to control competition merchandise or all partner uses of submitted work [2]
  • Entrants treating equipment, travel opportunities and headline prize pools as interchangeable cash [6]

What you will actually pay

Entry costs, explained.

2026: £10 per category for up to ten images; April discount 20%. Female Fifty Fathoms nominations are free.

Entry routes for Ocean Photographer of the Year 2026 — entries closed
Entry routeCostWho and what it covers
Standard category entry£10Up to ten images per category; the Portfolio Award requires exactly ten. [1][4]
April early entry£8 with advertised 20% codeHistorical April offer using EarlyBird20; the 2026 window is now closed. [4]
Female Fifty FathomsFree nominationA nomination award celebrating women in ocean photography; it is not free entry to the paid categories. [1][4]

Eight paid category entries at the normal rate would cost £80. Choose subjects and categories deliberately; do not confuse the free nomination route with a general fee waiver. The site’s remaining upload controls do not override its explicit closed notice. [1]

An ocean story can be made above or below the surface

Oceanographic’s competition accommodates wildlife, fine art, adventure and conservation, as well as human relationships with the sea and a portfolio route. This is a useful breadth for someone whose work connects natural history with people or policy. A clear caption can be decisive in explaining why an apparently beautiful scene also matters environmentally. [3][4]

Specific coverage and a verified exhibition host

Digital Camera World’s October 2026 feature examined Daniel Taylor’s commended conservation photographs from Baja California. That is concrete outside editorial attention to selected work, including a commendation rather than only the overall winner. It supports a real publicity opportunity without establishing that every finalist receives similar treatment. [5]

The Historic Dockyard Chatham independently confirms a public exhibition of 116 award-winning photographs from 28 March to 31 August 2026. This was a display of earlier winning work, not proof that the 2026 entrants were already exhibited in spring. The venue evidence is useful precisely because it shows an actual event, rather than a forecast audience figure. [7]

Cash, equipment and an expedition are different benefits

The 2026 schedule advertises a £10,000 cash pool, with £2,000 for the overall winner and £1,000 for each category winner except Female Fifty Fathoms. Other offers include up to £10,000 in Canon equipment, a watch for the Female Fifty Fathoms winner and an Ocean Census commissioned-photographer expedition opportunity. These are distributed across awards; they are not one person’s guaranteed package. [6]

The equipment is valued at UK recommended retail prices and has no cash substitute. Some sponsor benefits are allocated by matching photographers to prizes. The legal terms say a multiple-award winner receives the highest-value award, so do not add the overall and category cash automatically. Transfer fees reduce cash paid, and sponsors reserve broad rights to alter their offers. [6][2]

Original photographs, with a narrow prior-winner exclusion

The organisers invite amateurs and professionals internationally. There is no capture-year restriction, but photographs that had already won an established international competition overall before 1 April 2026 were excluded; portfolio entries are excepted, and lower placings remain eligible. AI-generated imagery is prohibited. Wildlife interference is unacceptable even if post-processing itself is allowed. [3][2][4]

The reviewed pages do not give a clear minimum entrant age. They also distinguish the Portfolio Award, which needs ten photographs, from ordinary categories accepting up to ten. An archive can therefore supply valid work, but a portfolio still needs range and coherence rather than ten near-identical frames. [4][2]

All submitted images, not only winners

Copyright stays with the photographer, but Oceanographic, the award and partners may use all submissions for competition-related exhibitions, publications, advertising and merchandise, without a stated expiry. Unrelated uses are prohibited. Optional luxury-print sales have a separate opt-in and 50–50 profit split; that does not remove the general merchandise permission already granted by entry. [2]

Closed on 30 June 2026

The formal deadline was 23:59 GMT on 30 June 2026. The current registration page explicitly says closed. Prepare JPEG, PNG or TIFF files below 5 MB without watermarks, plus a caption document for each set. Retain larger files for a finalist request. The overall award is selected from the other categories rather than purchased as an additional entry. [2][4][1]

Captions should identify the species or activity and explain the circumstances without exaggerating behaviour. Keep permission and permit records with the originals. The panel can move a photograph into a more suitable category, so select the closest fit and let the image’s specific story guide the submission. [4]

Details still worth checking.

The FAQ’s opening-year text says 2025 although the official calendar and closed registration refer to the 2026 call. This review uses the explicit 2026 closing date and does not infer a new entry window or a minimum age. [4][3][2]
