Ocean Geographic Pictures of the Year

Ocean Geographic's 2026 round is complete. Its US$50 and US$70 entry bundles suit a substantial selection of marine work; the advertised prize pool primarily needs to be understood through travel, equipment and voucher awards.

Our assessment · Worth considering

A specialist ocean-imaging contest with useful breadth, a youth waiver and demanding authenticity rules.

We would shortlist this for photographers already working seriously underwater, especially those who can build several strong category entries from an existing archive. The attraction is a recognisable specialist context and room for sequences, prints and storytelling. It is less compelling if a single photograph is your only viable entry or if travel prizes would be difficult to use. [2][4][5]

A good fit for

  • Underwater photographers with a varied archive, developing portfolio makers, and eligible under-18 entrants using the free Emerging route. [4][3]

Think carefully if

  • Photographers who routinely remove backscatter, use AI editing, depend on repeat-winning images, or cannot absorb print and travel costs. [1][3][5]

What you will actually pay

Entry costs, explained.

2026: US$50 Classic, US$70 Premium; under-18 Emerging entries free by organiser-issued code.

Entry routes for 2026 — closed
Entry routeCostWho and what it covers
ClassicUS$5020 images or a video submission; one-year digital membership included. [2]
PremiumUS$7030 images, including one-year digital membership. [2]
Under-18 EmergingFreeRequest a code with proof of age or school identification. [3]

Registration by 28 January 2026 added ten images free. This was a time-limited incentive, not a permanent free adult route. [1]

At full capacity the packages equate to US$2.50 or about US$2.33 per image, but unused slots do not improve your result. Membership is included, so judge its personal usefulness rather than subtracting the organiser's retail valuation automatically. [2]

Print entrants also need physical prints and delivery to Australia, or a separately priced local printing service. Obtain a quote before treating the entry fee as your total budget. [3]

Several kinds of marine storytelling

Category briefs range from fish behaviour and tiny marine animals to reefs, human presence, pelagic species and blackwater imagery. The Emerging award asks for three images, while the Master Portfolio asks for ten. This makes choosing a category an editorial decision: a striking portrait may be poorly suited to a behaviour brief that expects an observable action. [4]

Creative Vision permits in-camera multiple exposures. That specific allowance should be read within the broader authenticity rules, rather than taken as permission for arbitrary digital composites. [4][1]

A specialist award with documented winners

PT Hirschfield's 2023 Scuba Diver profile of Steven Walsh, republished by Divernet, records his first place in the 2022 Valerie Taylor colour-print award. This is concrete external recognition of an actual result in the diving press, not simply the organiser describing its own prestige. [7]

The profile concerns one established photographer and his wider practice; it does not prove that every entrant receives useful exposure. Our reading is that the contest has relevance within underwater photography. Claims that it is the world's most influential ocean competition remain the organiser's marketing language. [7][6]

Do not mistake the pool for cash

The website advertises prizes valued above US$110,000 across the competition. That is a combined valuation, not a single cash award. Its sponsor page illustrates the mix with a polar expedition place, a US$2,000 SEACAM equipment voucher, dive liveaboards, accommodation, strobes and expedition vouchers. [6][5]

The sponsor list warns that prizes may change and depend on availability; it should not be treated as a confirmed allocation for any future round. A trip's value to you depends on dates, transport, insurance and excluded expenses. Likewise, an equipment voucher can require further spending. We would read the winner's particular package before assigning it a personal value. [5]

Publication in Ocean Geographic and online accompanies winning work. The terms mention possible cash among award types but do not establish a universal cash payment, so the directory does not convert the advertised pool into a cash prize. [1]

Date exceptions and editing limits matter

Worldwide professionals and amateurs could enter. The general capture window began on 1 January 2021, with category exceptions. Emerging accepts work after 1 January 2019; Endangered Marine Animals uses after 1 January 2015, and Smartphone after 1 January 2023. [1][4]

Images that already won first place elsewhere are excluded. The terms prohibit captive settings, baiting, AI-assisted editing and backscatter removal, cap cropping at 35%, and allow original-file checks. Revisit your processing history before entering: an edit that is routine in commercial underwater work may fail these rules. [1]

Awarded images carry the licence

Copyright stays with the creator. Awarded work receives a worldwide, non-exclusive, irrevocable competition-promotion and exhibition licence; promotional use is limited to 28 months. Non-winning files are deleted after announcement. Unrelated commercial use requires prior consent. [1]

We regard the connection to competition use as a useful boundary. However, the 28-month wording specifically concerns promotion, so do not assume it cancels every exhibition permission. Consider future exclusive arrangements before accepting an award. [1]

Review the closed round without inventing a successor

The formal 2026 period ran from 8 January to the extended deadline of 6 April. Results are now announced. A registration page still saying open does not override that dated schedule or establish a new edition. [1][6][2]

The FAQ specifies high-quality JPEGs at 1,920 pixels on the long side in Adobe RGB, named with category code, entrant name and number. Captions should explain behaviour and location where relevant. Judging is anonymous, beginning with editorial and invited experts and moving to the final honouree panel. [3][1]

Details still worth checking.

For photojournalism, the category page requests 8–12 images but the formal terms cap supporting images at ten. An 8–10-image submission fits both; anyone intending eleven or twelve should obtain clarification. No future edition or prize allocation is assumed. [4][1]
