Hamdan International Photography Award
HIPA's 2026 Family season offered a real US$200,000 grand prize within a larger fund. The chance is substantial, but the licence and documentation obligations warrant as much attention as the headline amount.
Our assessment · Worth considering
Free entry and exceptional cash awards, balanced against broad winning-image rights.
We would consider HIPA with a strong, carefully chosen entry whose wider use you are comfortable authorising. The absence of an entry charge removes the immediate budget barrier; it does not remove the cost of preparing descriptions, permissions and original files. Our advice is to decide whether the rights terms suit the photograph before imagining what a win might fund. A sensitive family portrait, an agency-controlled news image and a self-owned landscape do not present the same practical permissions problem. Entering a different picture may be a better decision than hoping a restriction will never matter. [1][2]
A good fit for
- Adult photographers with self-owned work and complete releases, attracted to a judged international award without an entry fee. [1]
Think carefully if
- Photographers whose clients, subjects or exclusive licences require tight control over adaptation and later publication of a winning image. [1]

What you will actually pay
Entry costs, explained.
Free entry; adults 18+ worldwide. No paid tier or separate youth route.
| Entry route | Cost | Who and what it covers |
|---|---|---|
| 2026 main categories | Free | One photo per category/subcategory; Portfolio accepts 5–10. Adults 18+ at submission. [1] |
Budget preparation time rather than submission charges. We would assemble the evidence of authorship and subject permissions alongside the edit, instead of treating verification as something to organise only after success. [1]
Family is interpreted beyond a conventional portrait
HIPA is the Dubai-based Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum International Photography Award. The official season announcement places Family alongside Sports, General in colour and monochrome, Portfolio, and Dreams Through AI. The main theme can encompass relationships in nature and other forms of belonging, not just a posed human family. [2]
Dreams Through AI explicitly starts with a photographic source and develops it into an imagined scene. That is a distinct route; ordinary category submissions remain subject to authenticity rules. For Portfolio, our editorial suggestion is to build a sequence with a beginning, development and change of emphasis. Several individually dramatic pictures do not automatically make a persuasive story. [2][1]
A documented international award, not a guaranteed audience
PetaPixel's illustrated report on the 2025 Power season describes Gianluca Gianferrari receiving the US$200,000 grand prize for an erupting Mount Etna photograph. It also presents winning work in sports, monochrome, portfolios and aerial video, with an account of the Dubai ceremony. That demonstrates actual awards and outside editorial coverage rather than a prize advertised without a visible result. [4]
The article reports 87,000 images from 50,000 photographers for that earlier season. Those are participation figures, not the readership of a winning picture, and they should not be transferred to 2026. The organiser's September 2026 announcement separately reports cumulative milestones across the award's history. We would judge reputation through the published work and documented results, without translating large totals into a promised personal career benefit. [4][3]
The million dollars is distributed
The 2026 schedule gives US$200,000 to the grand-prize winner, chosen across the available categories. Most category podiums offer $40,000, $30,000 and $20,000; Portfolio offers $50,000, $40,000 and $30,000. The US$1 million headline includes these and special awards, rather than one entrant's payment. [1]
The Appreciation and Content Creator special awards are invitation-only. Photographer of the Year has a separate application about a year's achievements, projects and future plans. A normal photograph entry should not be confused with automatic consideration for every amount in the overall budget. [2]
Ownership and prior success need checking
There is no capture-date restriction for ordinary photographs. Major comparable prior wins are excluded; lesser awards are discretionary. Previously commercial work requires exclusive ownership of relevant rights. Nudity, violence and content judged contrary to UAE cultural or religious standards can be excluded. [1]
The winner licence extends beyond a single announcement
Final-stage work carries a perpetual worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free sublicensable promotional licence, including adaptation. Winners grant similarly lasting rights for any purpose. The FAQ's non-commercial description is narrower; we assess the formal winning-image clause. This broad permission is the principal drawback. [1]
Our recommendation is therefore conditional. A large potential award may make a broad licence acceptable to one photographer and unacceptable to another. The decision should reflect what future uses of that particular image you need to preserve, not only whether you retain the copyright title. [1]
The Family season is closed
Entry closed on 31 May 2026 at 23:59 UAE time, UTC+4. The organiser announced completed judging on 30 September and a ceremony on 10 November. This review does not claim that a later season is open. [2][3]
The member portal requires JPEGs: minimum 5 MB, 2,000-pixel long edge and 300 dpi. Keep originals and releases available. English or Arabic descriptions are required; use the category-specific instructions for individual images and portfolios. [1]
Details still worth checking.
The FAQ simplifies both previous-award and image-use wording. The fuller formal rules govern this assessment; borderline prior winners and restrictive existing licences require a specific ruling before a future entry. [1]
