Glanzlichter of Nature Photography

Glanzlichter combines a German exhibition and book programme with international entries. Its 2027 round is open until 10 January; documentary integrity matters as much as visual impact.

Our assessment · Recommended for the right photographer

A substantial nature-photography showcase with a sensible package fee and a clear distinction between the prize pool and your prize.

Our editorial judgement: recommended for photographers with a varied, carefully edited nature portfolio. The attraction is a specialist audience and a tangible publication and exhibition context. The package makes several strong entries economical, but filling every available slot is unnecessary: a weak image does not become useful simply because uploading it costs nothing extra. [3][2]

A good fit for

  • Nature photographers who can supply original files and want their strongest work seen beyond a screen. [1][3]

Think carefully if

  • The advertised €28,000-plus figure is a combined pool, including non-cash benefits, rather than an individual prize. [2]
  • Awarded photographs carry unpaid promotional and exhibition permissions without a stated end date. [1]

What you will actually pay

Entry costs, explained.

€30 for adults; €15 for entrants under 18. Both cover up to 30 photographs.

Entry routes for 2027 · 29th competition
Entry routeCostWho and what it covers
Age 18 and over€30Up to 30 images across the categories. [2]
Under 18€15Same image allowance; junior consideration alongside categories. [2]

No free route is published. Treat the fee as an affordable submission expense only if the programme suits your pictures; a larger allowance should not encourage spending on travel or equipment just to manufacture competition entries. [2]

A nature salon with room for quieter pictures

Founded in 1999 and now directed by Florian and Lisa Marie Smit, Glanzlichter offers eight categories covering landscapes, plants and fungi, abstraction, animal groups and special natural moments. The 2027 special category is Enduring the Cold. The organisers describe annual books and touring exhibitions across Germany. [3]

That breadth makes it possible to build an edit around several kinds of observation. A close study of a plant need not compete for attention by imitating an action-filled mammal photograph. Choose the category that best explains the picture’s central idea, then consider whether the image remains persuasive without its location’s fame. [3]

Outside attention to the photographs themselves

FOTO Cult’s account of the 2026 awards examines Rahul Sachdev’s winning combination of a giraffe and an Amboseli dust vortex, connecting its success to patient observation and the alignment of otherwise familiar elements. The magazine also records 24,674 entries from 1,074 photographers and shows category winners. This is substantive specialist coverage of the work, not merely an invitation to pay an entry fee. [4]

The lesson for entrants is more useful than the impressive volume: the winning image described in that coverage depends on timing and composition, rather than an exotic subject alone. Past recognition cannot guarantee press attention for a new winner, but it demonstrates that editors have found photographs from this competition worth discussing. [4]

Cash awards are much smaller than the headline pool

The overall award is €2,500; category winners receive €500, the Junior Award €750 and highlights €50. Books and trophies accompany awards. The PDF separates more than €12,000 cash from €16,000 non-cash benefits within the advertised pool. The junior package includes a CEWE exhibition. The ceremony is scheduled for 23 April 2027 in Fürstenfeldbruck. [2]

These sums can recognise a successful photograph without financing an expensive expedition. Value the exhibition and book because they fit your photographic aims, not by assigning them a speculative future income. Anyone travelling for the ceremony should make a separate budget; an invitation is not a promise to cover the trip. [2]

Keep a defensible photographic original

Entry is international, with organiser and sponsor connections excluded. No capture-date cutoff is stated. Domestic and farm animals are ineligible; captive wildlife must be marked C. Normal tonal adjustments, cropping, HDR, stacking and panoramas are allowed. Multiple exposures have strict in-camera, same-place/time limits. AI and other manipulation are prohibited; even removing underwater particles is forbidden. Originals may be requested. [1]

Review the whole editing history before choosing a finished file. A convincing-looking result may still fail a technical rule. Keep the source frames for permitted combinations and describe the technique accurately, rather than assuming the panel can infer what happened from the final JPEG. [1]

Jurors first assess independently, then deliberate together for three days. Names for 2027 were still pending when checked; this review does not substitute the previous year’s panel. [1]

Awarded images support the competition’s publicity

Copyright stays with photographers. Award-winning pictures receive a non-exclusive, unpaid publication and exhibition licence connected to the competition, including distribution to third parties for publicity. No duration is specified; names and countries accompany third-party publication. Entrants must control relevant rights and obtain consent from depicted people. [1]

That scope is compatible with an exhibition-led award, but should still be considered before offering a photograph to an exclusive client. Owning copyright and having sufficient freedom to grant a second licence are separate practical questions. [1]

Submit before noon, then watch for follow-up

The window runs from 1 October 2026 to noon CET on 10 January 2027. Register through the official site and upload JPEGs at the specified 1,920-pixel size. Originals requested from 27 January are due by 7 February. Use a reliable email address and retain a copy of the submitted edit. [2]

Allow time to inspect the uploaded previews. A disciplined selection should show different strengths without padding the portfolio with near-duplicates. The strongest reason to enter is that the photographs already exist and would benefit from this particular audience. [3]

Details still worth checking.

Named 2027 jurors are not yet published, and the awarded-image licence has no specified expiry. [1]
