Foam Talent Call
Foam Talent’s 2026 programme offered fifteen full selections and fifteen runners-up. The call closed in November 2025; the museum exhibition has since taken place, so this is an assessment of a documented edition.
Our assessment · Recommended for the right photographer
A serious route into photographic publishing and exhibitions for an emerging practice with two convincing bodies of work.
Our editorial judgement: recommended for emerging artists with a developed photographic voice. Its strength is the connection between edited work, a museum setting and photographic publishing. The application asks for evidence of a sustained practice, which makes it less appropriate for someone who has a few excellent standalone pictures but no coherent projects. [3][4]
A good fit for
- An emerging photographer or artist who wants curatorial and editorial attention for a distinctive practice. [3]

What you will actually pay
Entry costs, explained.
Standard entry €30; applicants unable to pay were invited to contact Foam for assistance.
| Entry route | Cost | Who and what it covers |
|---|---|---|
| 2026 Talent Call | €30 | Emerging artists worldwide; no age limit. [3][1] |
| Financial access request | By arrangement | Contact Foam if payment is a barrier; a waiver is not automatically guaranteed. [1] |
Free email submissions to other Foam Magazine issues or museum exhibition consideration are separate opportunities, not free entries into this call. For Talent, allow substantial editing time as well as the stated fee. [1]
An artist-development programme rather than a single-image podium
Foam’s Picter presentation describes a programme built around publication, exchanges with curators and peers, exhibitions and a digital platform. It identifies emerging practice rather than a particular photographic genre as the defining requirement. The programme began in 2007 and now describes itself as biennial. [3]
A useful application therefore shows how the artist thinks across more than one project. The two sequences can have different subjects, but the reviewer should still recognise a purposeful practice. Editing them as unrelated collections of favourites weakens that argument, even when individual frames are technically accomplished. [2]
The 2026 museum exhibition ran from 6 June to 26 August and presented work exploring belonging through home, family, community and place. That is a theme found in the selected work, not a retroactive restriction on what applicants were allowed to submit. [4]
Photographic editors have engaged with its selected artists
AnOther’s 2017 feature asked its photographic editor Holly Hay to discuss seven Foam Talent exhibitors. Her selections crossed fashion, documentary, mixed-media and gallery practices, with attention to Jack Davison’s visual atmosphere, Andrea Grützner’s architectural studies and Juno Calypso’s constructed character. Such detailed editorial response is stronger evidence of relevance than a claim that selection automatically launches a career. [5]
More recently, LFI’s Katrin Ullmann covered the 2026 exhibition, recording 2,892 submissions from 107 countries and discussing themes of displacement, identity, faith and home. That substantial field makes rejection a poor measure of a project’s absolute quality. The evidence supports an international curatorial audience, while no source can promise a particular applicant representation or commercial work. [6]
Full selection and runner-up status have different benefits
Fifteen full Talents receive €1,600 each, magazine and online presentation, the Amsterdam exhibition and a Deutsche Börse presentation, with an additional economy-fare travel allowance based on residence. Fifteen runners-up receive €250 and editorial/online features. These are individual artist fees, not one €1,600 pool. [1]
The platform also describes a chance for one selected artist’s work to enter the Art Collection Deutsche Börse. Acquisition is not promised to every Talent. For most applicants, the practical value lies in having a body of work seen in a considered context; the fee is useful compensation, but should not be treated as a large production grant. [3]
Emerging status matters more than age
There is no age cutoff; duos may enter. No capture-date window is stated. At least two Foam judges assess every submission, with no individual feedback promised. The work should represent an emerging, not already established, practice. [1]
The formal entry requires two distinct series of eight to ten JPEGs each, descriptions of up to 2,000 characters per series and a short CV. Files must be at least 2,000 pixels on the long edge. Identifiable people require explicit consent before entry, including parental or guardian consent for minors. [2]
The writing should tell a reader what is at stake and why the chosen form is necessary. Avoid using the description to explain away an unclear edit. A concise statement works best when it makes an already visible relationship between pictures easier to understand. [2]
All submitted work carries editorial and promotional permission
The terms permit worldwide, all-media use related to Foam Magazine and the Talent Call, with full credit. This applies on submission, rather than only after selection. No licence end date is specified, and the clause does not describe a copyright transfer. [2]
Photographers should consider existing exclusivity and subject agreements before entering unpublished material. Editorial use connected to a photography publication is understandable in this context, but its scope is broader than simply displaying a thumbnail to judges. Consent obtained only for a private project review may not cover that public afterlife. [2]
Use the extended deadline and the completed exhibition record
The call opened 1 October 2025 and was extended to 16 November, 23:59 Amsterdam time. Picter’s terms retain 9 November, but Foam explicitly announces the extension. This review uses the later official date and does not invent the next biennial call. [1][2]
Entry ran through Picter. Before any future submission, check the announced edition’s requirements, inspect every uploaded sequence and preserve the final text and files. The present museum record confirms that the promised exhibition format materialised; it is a better guide to the programme than treating an old application page as an open invitation. [3][4]
Details still worth checking.
The current FAQ resolves the extended closing date; older Picter wording remains. Named individual judges and licence expiry are not specified. No future deadline is assumed. [1][2]
