Fine Art Photography Awards
FAPA gives experimental and carefully stylised photographs a broad international platform. Its published winners attract specialist coverage, but paid categories and downloadable distinctions should be judged against your own goals, rather than taken as a promise of career-changing exposure.
Our assessment · Worth considering
A credible outlet for expressive photography, best approached with a firm entry budget.
Worth considering for a strong personal project that suits its visual sensibility. We would enter a tightly edited series or a particularly distinctive single image, then stop. The range of categories makes it easy to keep adding fees; being eligible for several is not itself a reason to buy several chances. Review past winners before deciding whether this audience is the one you want. [3][4]
A good fit for
- Photographers with a recognisable artistic approach: abstraction, atmosphere, conceptual construction or a cohesive personal series, including work that does not fit strict documentary conventions. [3]
Think carefully if
- Anyone treating a nomination as an investment with an expected financial return. Numerous distinctions can be useful recognition, but their career significance varies; spending more does not guarantee a more valuable result. [4]

What you will actually pay
Entry costs, explained.
Paid throughout: US$19–34 per entry, depending on division, format and timing; extra categories cost $10.
| Entry route | Cost | Who and what it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Amateur single / series | $19 / $24 early; $24 / $29 standard | Photography supplies less than half of your income; series: 2–5 images. [5][2] |
| Professional single / series | $24 / $29 early; $29 / $34 standard | Photography supplies at least half of your income. [5][2] |
| Each additional category | $10 | For the same entry in another suitable category. [5] |
Early pricing ends 11 October 2026. Payments are in US dollars and non-refundable. Decide your selection before paying: the FAQ says paid entries cannot be edited. A five-frame series is judged as one work, not five separate chances. [5][2]
Expression takes priority
Founded in 2014, FAPA explicitly encourages personal vision and experimentation across twenty categories. The brief accommodates transformed imagery as well as straight photography. That makes the competition worth exploring if your strongest work is interpretative, rather than an attempt to record a scene with documentary neutrality. [3]
Our advice is to make the concept legible without overexplaining it. For a series, give every photograph a purpose and remove repetitions. A coherent small body of work usually communicates an artistic decision more clearly than a collection assembled simply because the images share a location. [3]
Real coverage, with proportionate expectations
Fotopolis published the 2026 winners, including professional winner Jabi Sanz and amateur winner Thaddäus Biberauer, alongside an extensive selection of recognised work. This provides independent evidence that the results reach a specialist photography readership. It does not establish that every nominee receives comparable attention. [4]
We see FAPA as a useful juried showcase. Before paying, look beyond the largest headline award to the distinction you would realistically value. A published portfolio selection might be worthwhile for your practice; a badge alone may offer little if clients or curators in your field do not recognise it. [4]
Two cash winners, rather than a $5,000 first prize
The professional overall winner receives US$3,000 and the amateur winner US$2,000. The advertised $5,000 combines both awards. Category winners and nominees receive downloadable certificates and badges; these are different from the cash titles. Results are scheduled for 11 April 2027. [5]
Choose the correct division
The terms specify entrants over 18, excluding judges and relevant staff. The income-based professional definition applies regardless of whether you consider yourself an artist or hobbyist. Existing published work and photographs successful elsewhere are eligible, with no capture-date restriction. A series comprises two to five related images under one title. [1][2]
Digital manipulation is accepted. The rules still require photographs made through photographic techniques and owned by the entrant. Do not assume this authorises fully generated imagery: the published wording does not provide a detailed generative-AI policy. [2][1]
Copyright stays yours; promotional permission has no stated expiry
The licence is worldwide, non-exclusive and irrevocable for competition-related use. Awarded high-resolution work can be used without further payment for the awards' promotion. The terms prohibit resale and unrelated marketing. This is a lasting promotional commitment, so check any client restrictions before entering. [1]
Edit first, then submit
The final deadline is 14 February 2027. Upload through the official account and complete payment. Prepare borderless, unwatermarked JPEGs at 1,200 pixels on the longest side; retain high-resolution originals and RAW files for verification. Judges assess originality, artistic quality, subject and style. [5][1]
Details still worth checking.
The FAQ retains 2026 results dates. This review uses the homepage's explicitly labelled thirteenth-edition 2027 timetable. A detailed AI policy and closing-hour time zone were not established; ask the organiser if either affects your entry. [2][5][1]
