Dodho Magazine Open Call

Dodho's open call sells editorial consideration for portfolios or cover images. Publication is the prospective reward; decide whether its format suits your work before choosing a larger package.

Our assessment · Worth considering

A paid route to a photography magazine, best judged by the publication you want to make.

We would consider a focused project that already works as a sequence and would benefit from print presentation. The fee buys a selection process, so a useful decision starts with reading recent issues and imagining your photographs on those pages. Treat claims about career opportunities as possibilities, not an expected financial return. [1][4]

A good fit for

  • Authors seeking a curated publication credit and a home for a coherent body of work, rather than a prize fund. [1]

Think carefully if

  • Anyone relying on publication to generate commissions, or considering several packages simply because the unit price falls. [1]

What you will actually pay

Entry costs, explained.

Magazine: €45/€75/€90 for 1/2/3 portfolios; Cover: the same prices for 3/6/10 images.

Magazine€45 / €75 / €901 / 2 / 3 portfolios respectively. [1]
Cover€45 / €75 / €903 / 6 / 10 images respectively. [1]

No free submission route is stated. The FAQ calls prices final but also says applicable European VAT is added; confirm the checkout total. [1]

The three-portfolio package is €30 per project by arithmetic. That discount only helps if all three projects deserve submission; paying €45 for one finished sequence can be better value than spending €90 to include weaker work. [1]

Think in pages and sequences

The cover and portfolio routes ask different questions. For a cover, our priority would be a photograph that carries an immediate idea and survives a designer's layout. For the magazine, we would edit for progression: each picture should change what the reader knows or feels. Repetition can dilute even an attractive project. [1]

Dodho's general jury page is explicitly a roster spanning different editions. Famous names there should not all be presented as judges of this call. That distinction matters when deciding whether the likely readers have interests close to your own. [3]

A useful firsthand account, with limits

In his 2020 Creative Camera guide, photographer Darren Lewey discussed outlets he had personally used. He praised Dodho's image quality, accessible layout and scope for emerging photographers, while observing that some projects had a stronger opening image than the sequence that followed. He also reported quick responses for online publication. [4]

This is a contributor's experience, not an impartial survey of entrants or an evaluation of the 2026 paid call. It supports the idea that Dodho is an actual publishing outlet with an editorial identity. It does not establish current circulation, acceptance odds or a dependable route to representation. The useful question remains whether its audience and visual approach fit your intended project. [4]

Publication has value only if you want that publication

The advertised benefit is magazine or cover selection; no cash award is specified. Additional interviews are selective. We would assess the result as a publication credit and an opportunity to show a body of work together, without assigning a speculative cash value to contacts or future sales. [1]

Before spending, compare the presentation with your own website or a small self-published sequence. A juried magazine may offer a different context, but payment alone cannot guarantee that the right editor, curator or buyer will engage with the work. [4]

Existing work can be useful

Earlier photographs, prior publication and previous awards are accepted if you hold the rights. Duos and collectives can nominate one contact. The jury seeks a distinctive, coherent visual proposition. [1]

Authorship and permissions remain your responsibility under the legal policy, including rights involving identifiable people and third-party material. If a project was commissioned or produced collaboratively, check your agreement before offering it for another publication. [2]

A revocable editorial licence

Copyright remains with the author. The general policy permits worldwide, non-exclusive, revocable use for Dodho's editorial and promotional activity and excludes unrelated third-party exploitation. It also allows technical layout adaptations and requires explicit authorisation for print or commercial products. [2]

The call provides credited magazine and promotional permission, with withdrawal on 15 days' written notice except for work already printed or immediately entering print. Read both documents together and retain the authorisation attached to your entry. Our practical concern would be approving the intended print treatment, particularly for a tightly sequenced project where cropping could affect meaning. [1][2]

Prepare for a short production timetable

The 2026 window runs 1 October–6 December, with notification 12–13 December and publication scheduled for 25 December. Selected files are due 14–20 December. Submit one organised ZIP with JPEGs at least 1,200 pixels long; a portfolio statement PDF is optional. [1]

Have production-ready masters available before submitting. If the December turnaround clashes with travel or other commitments, arrange access to your archive so an acceptance can become a finished publication. [1]

Details still worth checking.

The reviewed call does not specify a deadline timezone or a maximum image count within each portfolio. Check those points in the submission form; the tax wording also needs checkout confirmation. [1]
