Creative Photo Awards

Creative Photo Awards offers a place for constructed, expressive and commercial photography. The 2026 entry window closed on 1 April; this review explains that edition without predicting the next call.

Our assessment · Worth considering

A useful free single-image route into Siena’s creative programme, with modest material prizes and broad festival-use permissions.

Our editorial judgement: worth considering, especially with one carefully chosen free entry. The exhibition context is meaningful, but the modest equipment award makes this a visibility decision rather than a financial opportunity. Paying for a large submission becomes harder to justify unless several photographs clearly suit the creative remit. [3][4][1]

A good fit for

  • Photographers whose work has a strong artistic idea, including commercial pictures, portraits and deliberately enhanced landscapes. [4]

Think carefully if

  • Entered pictures can support official festival merchandise without a separate usage fee. [1]
  • Physical trophies depend on attending the ceremony; travel can exceed the value of the material award. [3]

What you will actually pay

Entry costs, explained.

One image free; three images €30 including the free image; further images €10 each; a series €35.

Entry routeCostWho and what it covers
Single free image€0Professional or amateur. [1]
Three-image package€30Includes the free photograph; additional images €10 each. [1]
Series€35Five to nine images. [1][4]

Fees are non-refundable. Decide on the edit before purchasing a larger allowance. A series should have a clear relationship between its frames; the discounted price per picture is not a reason to submit unrelated images together. [1][4]

Ideas matter across several photographic practices

The categories include advertising, architecture, people, weddings, animals, fine art, open theme and nature/landscape. Advertising explicitly accommodates promotional work, while the people category spans fashion, beauty and portraiture. Series require five to nine images. The common ground is an authored visual approach, not a single documentary genre. [4]

This creates an opening for pictures that might sit awkwardly in a strict reportage contest. A constructed portrait or stylised product photograph can be assessed within an appropriate context. The useful preparation is to identify what your treatment adds: unusual colour or compositing should serve an idea, rather than merely advertise the amount of work involved. [4]

A festival with documented outside coverage

FOTO Cult covered the 2025 Siena awards ceremony at the Teatro dei Rinnovati and identified Andrew Rovenko’s The Shuttle as the Creative winner. Its account discusses how the Melbourne photograph, made during pandemic restrictions, turns ordinary life toward imagination. The coverage distinguishes Creative from the separate Siena International and Drone awards, which is important when assessing this specific opportunity. [6]

That is evidence of editorial attention to an actual winning photograph. It does not establish a guaranteed commission, sale or audience size for every shortlisted entrant. Our assessment gives greater weight to this observable recognition than to broad promises of international exposure. [6]

Equipment and limited accommodation support

The overall winner receives €500 worth of photographic equipment and a €400 contribution toward two nights in Siena, alongside a crystal trophy and exhibition/gallery benefits. These are not a €900 unrestricted cash prize. Category and runner-up awards list trophies and presentation opportunities without equivalent cash. Trophies and certificates are handed only to attendees; uncollected equipment shipping is the winner’s expense. [3]

The prize page describes the I Wonder If You Can exhibition and possible village displays selected from submissions. An entrant interested in seeing work physically displayed may value that considerably. Someone entering principally to fund new work should compare the small material return with the likely cost of attending an Italian festival. [3]

Creative freedom has an explicit AI boundary

Professionals and amateurs may enter, with no image-date restriction; previously published or awarded work is accepted. The terms prohibit AI generation and AI-based image manipulation despite the FAQ’s expansive language about techniques. Finalists must supply human-captured originals. Entrants must control rights and have depicted people’s permission. [1]

The named current panel includes Daria Bonera, Gina Williams, Marianna Santoni, Inessa Yurovskikh, Raphaëlle Granger and Tetiana Udovychenko. Entries undergo professional prescreening before jury selection. Review the work as a photograph with a clear intention, rather than trying to guess a formula from the judges’ names. [5][1]

Festival promotion includes merchandise

Copyright remains yours, but all entered images receive unpaid promotional permission connected with the competition and Siena festival, including calendars and official merchandise. Credit is required, with omissions subject to correction. No expiry is specified. The published Creative terms also refer to the sibling Siena International award; read the stated festival-wide scope conservatively. [1]

The permission matters even for a photograph that never wins. Consider whether you would be comfortable seeing this particular image used on a festival product before submitting it, and check existing client agreements. A free entry can still involve a meaningful licensing decision. [1]

This review covers the closed 2026 call

The central Siena schedule gives 15 February–1 April 2026 for Creative entries. The festival runs 10 October–29 November 2026. The prize page retains generic September ceremony wording, so the explicitly dated central schedule is the relevant current guide. No next-edition deadline is assumed here. [2]

Entry uses the official online form, with unmarked JPEGs no longer than 1,920 pixels. Keep full-resolution files and originals ready. [1]

For a future announced call, start with the strongest single image and reassess the then-current terms before paying for more. If a sequence is necessary to communicate the idea, edit its beginning, progression and ending before considering the series route. [4]

Details still worth checking.

The prize page’s generic ceremony month differs from the dated 2026 festival calendar. Use the current calendar; the next call is not yet established in this review. [3][2]
