Communication Arts Photography Competition
Communication Arts is most relevant to photographers seeking editorial and commercial visibility. The 2027 call is open internationally, with lower prices for actual school assignments and a March deadline.
Our assessment · Worth considering
A paid route into an established industry annual, with no cash prize
Worth considering as a targeted promotion expense for work suited to art directors, editors and commissioners. Publication is the prize: there is no cash return promised. Enter a strong, relevant project and judge the fee against your own marketing budget. [1][3]

What you will actually pay
Entry costs, explained.
Still photographs: US$40 single / US$80 series; school assignments: US$20 / US$40. Late entries add US$10 each.
| Entry route | Cost | Who and what it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Regular still photography | US$40 single; US$80 series of up to five | Eligible advertising, books, editorial, sale, institutional, self-promotion or unpublished work [2] |
| Student still photography | US$20 single; US$40 series of up to five | Work made for a school assignment [2] |

| Student motion | US$45 single; US$90 series of up to three | School-assignment video work [2] |
The regular deadline is 12 March 2027; entries accepted afterwards through 26 March cost another US$10 per submission. No free route is offered. [1]
Fees are non-refundable; paying by wire transfer adds US$25 in bank-processing charges. [1]
A photography annual for the visual-communications industry
Communication Arts places the photography award alongside its design, advertising, illustration, interactive and typography competitions. That context matters: the potential audience is an industry that commissions images, not simply other entrants collecting badges. The current programme lists 12 March 2027 as the photography deadline. [3]
The category structure accommodates both commissioned work and personal experiments. A photographer need not invent a client to participate: unpublished work has its own route, while sale categories cover prints, licensing and gallery work. Choose the category that describes the project’s actual use. [2]
A tangible publication outcome
California Baptist University’s photography programme reported three student selections in the 2026 annual, naming Noah Witt, Noelle Joy Gmyr and Uriel Sanchez. It reported 110 selected projects from 1,509 entries. This is independent, first-hand corroboration of selections and the publication route, though the school is celebrating its students rather than offering a neutral critical review. [4]
The same report names the previous jury’s mix of photographers, picture editors, art production and education. That supports an industry-facing interpretation of the award. It does not justify promising a job or repeating the school’s superlative claims about being the world’s most exclusive competition. [4]
Exposure has to be useful to your practice
The organiser explicitly offers no cash prize. Selected work appears in the print and digital annual and online, with a contact index for represented photographers. Winners receive an aluminium Award of Excellence and contributor certificates. The public competition programme confirms publication and the physical award as its central benefits. [1][3]
A contact-bearing annual can be a sensible promotional outlet for a photographer whose likely buyers read visual-communications publications. It is harder to justify solely as a financial gamble. Consider whether you can use a selection in a portfolio, client update or professional introduction; those are practical uses of recognition, not guaranteed returns. [3]
Recent work; the student discount follows the assignment
The 2027 call accepts work first produced or published from March 2026 through March 2027, from any country. AI text-to-image submissions are excluded. The student category is for school assignments, not every personal image made by an enrolled student. [1][2]
A regular photographic series contains up to five images from one project. At US$80 it costs less than five separate US$40 entries, but grouping should serve the work: a weak additional frame can undermine the presentation. The fee saving is useful only when the images belong together. [2]
Ownership retained, publication and promotion authorised
Authors retain their rights. Entry acknowledges publication and exhibition use, and selected work may be reproduced online, in print and digital editions, and in promotion of the magazine, competition and future related activity. No specific end date is stated. Make sure commissioned-work permissions cover that use before submitting. [1]
Prepare an online submission
Upload through the linked competition system with project credits and English descriptions. Still images must be RGB JPEGs no larger than 2MB. The jury uses successive in-or-out votes; judges cannot vote on work they helped create. Only accepted entrants are promised notification, within two months of the final deadline. [1]
For budgeting, two regular single photographs cost US$80 before any late charge. One school-assignment series costs US$40. Those concrete totals are more helpful than treating the lowest student price as the universal cost of entry. [2]
Details still worth checking.
The 2027 page does not yet name that edition’s jury. Its process is published; the 2026 panel is background only. [1][4]
One deadline sentence contains the obvious year typo 20276. The heading, FAQ, competition index and dated category PDF consistently identify March 2027. [1][2][3]
