CEWE Photo Award
CEWE’s 2027 Photo Award offers a broad international showcase with up to one hundred free submissions. Its appeal is accessible entry and real published winners, balanced against a substantial continuing publicity licence. The €250,000 headline describes a total prize pool, not cash for one photographer.
Our assessment · Worth considering
A generous free entry allowance, with travel and vouchers rather than a cash jackpot
Our judgement: worth considering if you enjoy making individual pictures across several subjects and are comfortable with CEWE using submitted work for ongoing competition publicity. Free entry makes a small, considered selection easy to justify. The large allowance is not a target to fill; an edit that gives each photograph a clear reason to be there is more useful than uploading an entire holiday archive. [2][4]

What you will actually pay
Entry costs, explained.
Free worldwide entry for up to 100 photographs; no CEWE purchase or membership required.
| Entry route | Cost | Who and what it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Main competition | Free | Age 18+; up to 100 self-taken photographs through a registered account. [4][2] |
| Young Talent | Free | Age 16–25 at submission; under-18s need legal-representative consent. [4] |
The rules say participation does not depend on buying goods or being a CEWE customer. The cost to weigh is your editing time and the image-use permission. Do not confuse the company’s print-product shopping pages with an entry requirement. [4]
A broad brief with a new abstract category
The 2027 launch names ten subjects, ranging from landscape, animals and people to architecture, street, travel, sport and close-up work. The new abstract category seeks images made with a camera using light, movement, viewpoint and detail; it is not a route for generated pictures or collages. Choose a category that supports the photograph’s main idea rather than its incidental contents. [1]
The announced international jury is chaired by Christie Goodwin and includes figures such as Ulla Lohmann, Lois Lammerhuber and Jimmy Nelson, alongside CEWE leadership. The terms provide for three monthly selections that proceed to the final judging. Monthly recognition is therefore a preliminary selection, not the overall title. [1][4]
Published winners, with substantial competition for attention
Digital Camera World’s August 2025 feature illustrated all ten category winners and reported more than 656,000 photographs from 153 countries. Its examples included Mike Taylor’s charged World Cup pub scene and Gerson Antonio Toigo’s cat photographed on an iPhone. This is useful independent evidence that winning work receives photography-media coverage and that expensive equipment is not the only route to recognition. [3]
That volume also puts the long prize list in perspective: a thousand awards do not make any individual entry likely to win. Coverage of a previous selected group does not promise an audience, commission or publication for your submission. Enter for the possibility of selection, with the licence already acceptable before you know the outcome. [3][2]
Read the values as restricted benefits
The published main package is a trip valued at €10,000, a €5,000 photography-equipment voucher and €2,500 in CEWE products. The 2027 announcement adds an individual workshop with Christie Goodwin. Other category winners receive equipment and CEWE-product vouchers. These are recipient packages within a roughly €250,000 pool, not an offer of €250,000 cash. [2][1]
The UK page lists €2,500 equipment and €1,000 CEWE-product vouchers for places 11–30, and €100 CEWE-product vouchers for 31–1000. The conditions prohibit cash exchange and transfer to another person. Assess what those benefits are worth to you, including whether you would use the products, rather than equating face value with unrestricted money. [2][4]
Authentic photographs and transparent editing
The main age threshold is 18, with the separate youth exception described above. Organisers and CEWE staff and relatives are excluded. You must control the relevant rights and respect the rights of people shown. There is no explicit creation-year cutoff in the terms examined. Camera-made work is required; AI-generated content and generated fills are prohibited. [4]
Edits must not materially change the picture’s meaning or add and remove recorded information; processing must be explained in the description. Keep the original JPEG, RAW or TIFF, because CEWE can request it to verify authenticity. Without an original, a questioned image can be removed. Watermarks, frames and vignettes can also lead to exclusion. [4]
Copyright retained, but a lasting licence to submitted work
CEWE does not acquire copyright. Entry nevertheless grants CEWE and affiliated companies irrevocable, worldwide, perpetual permission for competition-related PR and non-commercial self-promotion, including subsequent competition communication. It covers online and offline media, exhibitions, press publications, competition photobooks and charity auctions of exhibits. Credit is promised, and further commercial use requires separate consent. [4]
Images can normally be withdrawn through the account, but winners and already published photographs require a request to CEWE for deletion. Do not assume removing an upload cancels prior publication or the expressly irrevocable licence. This breadth is the principal reason our recommendation is qualified despite the free fee. [4]
The 2027 timetable and practical upload
The dedicated runtime clause specifies 6 May 2026–31 May 2027, closing at 23:59 GMT+2; the dated launch announcement confirms those dates. One later submission clause incorrectly repeats 31 May 2026. We identify this as an internal date inconsistency and use the specifically labelled 2027 runtime, rather than presenting the stale clause as a future deadline. [4][1]
Create an account and upload JPEG or PNG files of at least 1,080 by 1,080 pixels. Check captions and processing disclosures before submitting. Winners must respond within fourteen days of notification or risk losing their prize, so keep the account email current and monitor it after judging. [4]
Details still worth checking.
The terms retain a contradictory 2026 date in clause 7.2 despite the 2027 runtime and launch. Exact travel arrangements, voucher redemption restrictions and final exposure cannot be inferred from their advertised values; check the specific prize offered if selected. [4][2]
