AOP Open Awards
The AOP Open offers single, series and moving-image routes. Its 2026 call is closed; the binding terms set a tighter creation-date window than the landing page.
Our assessment · Worth considering
A credible professional audience for personal or commissioned work, with rules worth reading closely.
Our editorial judgement: worth considering for a small, deliberate edit that would benefit from scrutiny beyond its existing audience. The entry cost is manageable for one strong piece, but grows quickly across several submissions. Its professional context is more persuasive than the prospect of recouping fees through prize money; the award is a selective opportunity, not a marketing plan in itself. [1][3]
A good fit for
- Photographers with a distinctive single image, coherent short series or resolved moving-image work. [1]

What you will actually pay
Entry costs, explained.
Single: £15 members / £20 non-members. Series or moving image: £25 / £35. All include 20% VAT.
| Entry route | Cost | Who and what it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Single | £15 / £20 | AOP member / non-member. [1] |
| Series or moving | £25 / £35 | AOP member / non-member; series contains 2–5 images. [1] |
No free route is advertised. Membership should be evaluated on its wider usefulness rather than purchased simply to obtain a small discount. A series should earn its place through the relationship between pictures: adding weaker images to fill a format is unlikely to make an entry more persuasive. [1]
An open brief needs a disciplined edit
Personal and commissioned work can enter. The 2026 panel includes Joseph Ford, Louise Hagger, Carolyn Mendelsohn and Nick Turpin. Our advice is to choose the format that best serves the work, then compare it with other possible entries in that format. A strong single photograph should not need an accompanying explanation of why the shoot mattered to you. [1]
For a series, ask whether the order creates meaning and whether every frame changes the reading. For moving work, consider whether sound, pace and duration are doing useful work. These are editorial suggestions, not unpublished judging criteria: the advantage of an open brief is freedom, but that freedom puts more responsibility on the entrant’s selection. [1]
The Open has identifiable winners and outside coverage
Macfilos’s account of the 2025 AOP Photography Awards separately identified the Open winners: Owen Harvey received Gold and Jerome Maas Silver. It described a panel drawn from photography, production, Netflix and artist management. That reporting demonstrates an external record of the Open, while avoiding the mistake of attributing all the main AOP programme’s category prizes to this separate route. [3]
The distinction matters when assessing reputation. An umbrella awards programme can produce considerable attention without every award attracting the same response. We would treat the published winners and relevant industry readership as a positive signal, while making no promise of commissions, representation or a particular audience size for a future finalist. [3]
Cash and equipment should be valued separately
Advertised cash is £1,250 Best in Show, £250 Gold and £100 Silver. Best in Show also receives Fujifilm kit valued at £1,500 and a Capture One Studio year; Gold receives an All in One year. Membership benefits are conditional. Selected finalists and winners are promised a Fujifilm House of Photography exhibition in early 2027. Equipment and subscriptions are not additional cash. [1]
The PDF is the cautious reference point
Entrants must be over sixteen. Binding terms require all elements from 1 September 2024 onward; most must originate with the entrant, with other contributions under their direction. Previously selected AOP exhibition or winning work cannot return. Generative AI is excluded, and original files may be requested. Collaborative permissions and releases remain the entrant’s responsibility. [2]
The date discrepancy could affect an otherwise good picture, so do not quietly adopt the more permissive website wording. For the closed edition, this review follows the formal conditions. A future call needs a fresh check; neither the old creation window nor the old price list should be rolled forward automatically. [2][1]
A defined promotion period, with an archive exception
Copyright stays with the creator. Successful work is licensed non-exclusively, unpaid, to AOP and partners for fifteen months of programme promotion; web archives continue indefinitely unless removal is requested in writing. Credit is promised where practicable. All entries may appear in ceremony displays. Exhibition sales attract 30% commission. [2]
Those distinctions make the licence reasonably focused, but the archive exception should be understood before offering exclusivity elsewhere. The PDF says AOP-funded exhibition prints, yet later allows finalists to be asked for their own. Confirm practical print costs if selected; the review does not assume every possible exhibition expense is covered. [2]
Review the closed call as preparation
Entries closed on 8 June 2026. The rules scheduled finalists in September and winners in October. The online route requires anonymous visible images but identifying metadata; read the technical specifications before export. Retain the exact files and permissions used for submission so any later verification is straightforward. [2]
The useful next step is an edit, not speculative spending. Compare a few possible submissions, decide what each demonstrates, and keep only work that would still justify its fee without winning. Follow the official page for a newly dated call before preparing a paid entry. [1]
Details still worth checking.
The website and PDF disagree on the creation cutoff. Exhibition-print responsibility also needs confirmation if selected; neither issue is concealed in this assessment. [2][1]
