Deadline: July 1st, 2007

Capture an original ‘vision of science’ image on camera and you could have a winning entry for the UK’s premier photographic awards scheme for science and technology. The first prize is £1000 in each category and entries are invited from amateur and professional photographers alike. The competition will run from 23 April until 1 July 2007.

The photographic awards are organised by the Engineering and Technology Board (ETB) and sponsored by the Science Photo Library and the Daily Telegraph to promote ongoing discussion about science and technology. Back for 2007, the competition has been expanded to reflect the broad scope of science within the fields of engineering and technology.

As John Morton, Chief Executive of the ETB explains: “We believe this competition is a great vehicle for communicating the importance of science and technology to our understanding of the world. It also allows the stunning world of scientific imagery to be broadcast to a wider audience.”

This year’s judging panel of scientists, photographers and picture editors will again be looking for striking images, giving new insights into the world of science and technology or the natural world. Indeed, the winning images could demonstrate a scientific phenomenon, a visual representation of data or possibly something which has never been shown before.

Previous winning images include a visual representation of a migraine, a balloon popping, the path of a pendulum over five minutes and a close-up of a grain of salt next to a peppercorn.

There are five main categories as follows:
Action Capturing a scientific, technological, engineering process or event as it happens in the natural world.
Close-up Revealing the world in a way that cannot be seen with the naked eye, which may include close-ups or satellite/astronomical images.
People Communicating the impact of science, technology, engineering or medicine on peoples’ lives.
Concepts Illustrating a scientific, engineering or technological concept which may include manipulated or generated images.
Art Illustrating the beauty of science, engineering or technology.

In addition, there are two special prizes this year, Best in Show will be awarded to the best overall picture and Young Photographer will go to the best under 18 entry.

Winners will be invited to an awards ceremony at The Royal Society on 20 September 2007 and the winning images will be published nationally.
