Deadline: December 4th, 2009

As one of the largest photographic events existing today, The Sony World Photography Awards (SWPA), reach far beyond an awards programme for the still image. The SWPA is a convergence of festival events, focused photographic agendas, exhibitions, awards schemes, student programmes and an industry-led gala evening ceremony which marks the pinnacle of the week-long event in April 2009.

The Sony World Photography Awards Gala and central exhibitions that support the awards’ nominees and honourees, occurs once a year in the prestigious Palais des Festivals in Cannes, France. The evening welcomes some of the most influential names in the photography industry, from press and media to gallerists, publishers, agents, critics, aficionados and the renowned artists themselves.

From fine art to applied photography in fashion, advertising and sport to humanistic and documentary photography of people, social, cultural and current affairs to the environmental image of landscape, wildlife and ecology, there are few subjects or genres left undiscovered. The celebration of the still image – its roots, conception, adaptation and continuous evolution – is a constant parallel, unifying all categories of the Sony World Photography Awards.

This impressive union of distinct photographic genres has spurred many of the industry’s elite to actively support the SWPA. A very select group of these heavyweights have been invited to form the World Photographic Academy. To date, close to 100 members from the photographic community belong to this academy, from leading international agencies, guilds, galleries, publishing houses, foundations, press and of course renowned photographers themselves, such as Elliott Erwitt, Tom Stoddart, Susan Meiselas, Stuart Franklin, Mary-Ellen Mark and many more.

Beyond the week-long celebration in Cannes, the Sony World Photography Awards continuously create ways in order to support and further promote its existing industry network, the newly discovered photographers and those studying the craft. These many year-long initiatives include the Student Programme, The Sony World Photography Awards Global Tour and the Online World Photography Awards Magazine, Galleries and Store.

Professional Competition

The Sony World Photography Awards are entirely international, welcoming professional photographers from across the globe to submit their photographs into a highly competitive awards programme.

As an entering professional photographer, you will be judged by the World Photographic Academy in the hopes of being recognized by leading industry figures and taking the stage in Cannes to receive one of the 12 prestigious category awards and, the most coveted prize, L’iris d’Or, given to The Sony World Photography Awards Photographer of the Year, with the recipient taking, amongst other things, prize money of $25,000.

Submitting your images: There are 12 categories in the professional programme, spread across 3 main photographic genres; to view the categories please click on the link to the left.
The awards: All 36 Category finalists, will be showcased as part of the official 2010 Finalists exhibitions in Cannes, published in the winner’s book and announced to the worldwide press as Sony World Photography Awards Category Finalists. Deadline: 31st March 2009
This year’s theme: Living Planet

Celebrate an extraordinary place to live – Earth.

We live on an incredible planet. From the biggest, bustling metropolises, to seemingly barren plains, our planet is bursting with all kinds of life. We’re its beneficiaries, and its caretakers.

What makes our planet so alive? Is it the more than 6.5 billion human beings going about their business? The changing climate, or conservation efforts? Is it frenetic cities or untamed wilderness?

Turn your photographic eye towards our amazing planet and show us what you see – and you could win some fantastic prizes.

About the award

The Lumix Award is awarded each year to celebrate excellence in digital photography.

It was established in 2003 to showcase the unique creativity associated with digital photography – no longer bound by the constraints of 35mm film cameras.

Each year’s competition centres on a different creative theme. Previous themes have included “Man and Machine” (2003), “Perfect Place” (2004), “Everyday Adventures” (2005), “Same Sights – Different Views” (2006), and “Capture your Culture” (2007). This year’s theme is “Living Planet”.

How it works

Upload your images exploring the theme “Living Planet” for your chance to either become a monthly or overall Lumix Award winner.

You can enter one image per month for the 2008 Lumix Award before the closing date on 31 March 2009.

Each photograph you submit will be entered into the monthly competition, and will also go into the running to win the overall prize. Your photographs will be judged by professional photographers.

Please note: all photographs entered must be taken with a digital camera.

Overall prize

Win a once-in-a-lifetime trip to one of the world’s natural wonders – the Eden Project in Cornwall, England.

The overall winner of the Lumix Award competition – the single best digital still image we receive – will win a 5-day trip for two to Cornwall, England, including two 3-day passes to the Eden Project, where the winner and his/her guest can experience and explore its global garden.

The winner will also receive a Lumix DMC-G1 digital camera. This versatile camera offers you an amazing photographic power being incredibly light and packed with smart features in an extremely small and stylish body. Take it with you everywhere. It’s the perfect camera for this year’s Lumix Award theme.

Lumix LX3
Two lucky runners-up will receive the brilliant compact Lumix LX3, a digital camera featuring true 16:9 format.

Lumix FZ28 Digital camera
Every month for the duration of the competition one winner will be chosen by a member of the judging panel from a shortlist to win a Lumix FZ28 Digital camera.

Deadline: June 17th, 2008

Artists Wanted is proud to announce EXPOSURE: a nationwide open call for photography!

“This is the story of the power of images. In this search we are looking for pictures worth more than a thousand words. We are looking for undiscovered talent, those who seek exquisitely in the language of lenses and aperture – those who create without bounds. Join us in building a nation wide search for photographic excellence. This is the story of the power of EXPOSURE.”

Artists Wanted is a collaborative project between several New York City artists and creative organizations working to build new lasting opportunities for emerging talent. They‘ve experienced first hand the difficulties of breaking into the professional art world and it is their mission to make this process more welcoming, dynamic and open-ended.

The Grand Prize: The Top Photographer will have their work presented in a massive scale photo show on buildings in the top New York City Art Districts: Chelsea, Dumbo and Williamsburg. An Opening Event will be hosted at the Leo Kesting Gallery in Manhattan on August 9th. They will receive: $2,008 cash, a full-press promotional campaign and a feature in our upcoming publication, The Annual.

Student Award: The Top Student Photographer will receive a $1,000 scholarship and a feature in The Annual.

Educator‘s Grant: The Educator of the Top Student Photographer will receive a $500 discretionary grant and a feature in “The Annual” for Teaching Excellence.

People‘s Choice Award: The public will vote on all the portfolios on our site and select their Top Artist. The Peoples Choice Photographer will receive a $500 grant and a feature in The Annual

Q: Who owns the work/copyrights after it is submitted? You do, of course. We really are just a few artists from Brooklyn and Manhattan trying to make real opportunities for others like us from around the world. We are not business people and have no intention of owning your work. We would not even know what to do with it if we took the copyrights somehow. Long story short, everything you submit is yours.

Q: Can I submit work if I live outside of New York?
A: Yes. Artists Wanted accepts submissions from all over the world. In fact, we’ll install your work at the Leo Kesting Gallery in the Meat Packing District in New York City even if you can’t make it to the opening.
