Burrard-Lucas.com has launched a wildlife photography competition.

The theme is “Wildlife Portraits”. A photograph of any animal is eligible as long as it was taken in the wild. The competition is open to participants worldwide, of any age.

There is a fantastic prize on offer for the winner: an Olympus SP-570UZ, a camera with a 10-megapixel sensor, a 2.7-inch LCD screen and 20x optical zoom with image stabilization – a perfect combination for wildlife photography.

PNY Technologies, Inc. announced that they will donate $100,000 to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital as part of the 2008 Thanks and Giving campaign to help find cures for pediatric cancer and other deadly diseases.  PNY also unveiled a family photo contest to raise additional money for the hospital.

St. Jude, located in Memphis, Tenn., is the only pediatric cancer research and treatment facility where no child is ever turned away because of the family’s inability to pay.  With an average of 5,400 patient visits annually and research findings shared with doctors and scientists worldwide, the hospital depends on corporate and public contributions for it to thrive. 

PNY is encouraging parents and customers to donate through its “Let Our Memory Capture Your Memories” photo contest by including donation and contest information in specially marked packages of select SD memory cards and USB flash drives. Parents can submit a favorite photo of their child to the contest and encourage their friends and family to vote for the photo. The program runs through January 31, 2009.  PNY will donate $20,000 to St. Jude in the winner’s name.

“PNY is extremely proud to join St. Jude in its efforts to improve the lives of so many families around the world.  We’re also very thankful for the healthy children in our lives and believe supporting this outstanding organization is a great way for us to help further their cause,” said Tony Gomez, vice president of sales and marketing for PNY.  “Our goal is to raise another $50,000 for St. Jude through the family photo contest.  It is also a fun way for parents to share the wonderful childhood memories they have captured on PNY SD cards and USB flash drives.”

Grand prize winner
The top 10 photos receiving the most votes will be submitted to a panel of judges who will select
the Grand Prize Winner. PNY will donate $20,000 to St. Jude in the winner’s name.
The winner will receive a PNY prize package valued at $500.

Introducing the 8th Annual Everyman Photo Contest.

Since 2001, The Everyman holds an amateur photography contest with the belief that anyone who’s ever taken a picture in their life has taken at least one good picture.

The main rule is simple: NO PROFESSIONALS! A professional is defined as anyone who profits from their photography in any way other than photo contests.

- buddy james best title

Prizes in each category:
- first place $50.00

The from the attic bonus category includes photos taken more than 25 years ago.

The Buddy James Best Title award was inspired by and is in honor of a 2002 entrant who raised the bar as for what is possible in titling an image.

All photos entered will be evaluated by a panel of at least fifteen judges from around the world. Of the judges, none are professional photographers nor are they trained in the ways of artistic presentation or composition. Each judge will simply select the photos that strike them most for whatever reason.

How to enter

Entry rules
You must be 18 years of age or over to enter.

Categories
The competition is divided into three categories ­ Outdoor, Culture and Entertainment ­ and your secret hideaway will need to fit into one of these categories. Voting

Turn your lens towards the action behind the sporting action!
If you’re a photographer and think you know a good sports volunteer photo when you see one then enter our competition.
You could win £250 worth of the latest photography equipment.
The best entrant as judged by our panel will receive £250 worth of Jessops vouchers redeemable against goods of their choice in any store.

But we’re not after the usual sports action shots.
runningsports wants to recognise and capture the action that goes on behind the scenes that makes sport happen.
So we want great pictures of hidden heroes of sport, the volunteers.
Those treasurers and club secretaries, the fixture-planners and fund raisers, and all those who give up their time for their sport.

Charge up your camera, load it with at least a 1GB card (or have seven or more rolls of 36-exposure film on hand), and be prepared to shoot, shoot, shoot.

Your assignment is to take at least one picture every five minutes during the day. You get eight hours off for sleep, and another hour for…well, stuff you wouldn’t want to involve photography. That’s a minimum of 225 photos.

Your subjects are all up to you. This is to become a better photographer, not just a photo opportunist. That is, you don’t want to be someone who only gets a photo when a postcard-style setting presents itself.

We improve as photographers by forcing ourselves to shoot; by finding the photograph when there doesn’t seem to be one; by studying the light — every kind of light we encounter — and seeing the photo potential in it. Capturing a great image of Angelina Jolie under a softbox is easy. But how about that candy wrapper in the gutter? Or that group of friends posing under a mixture of natural, incandescent, and fluorescent light? Can you still make an outstanding photo when the subject and conditions aren’t perfect?

The time pressure, not to mention the pressure to make as many of the 225-plus photos as good as possible, will be intense. Maddeningly so, I suspect.
